Here at Trade Show Internet we’re asked questions all the time like, “how much bandwidth do I need at my event for 13 devices streaming video?” Or, “what type of bandwidth would I need if I’m just registering people at our desk, via 75 connected devices? These questions can get pretty complex, especially when we’re dealing with larger events that say, require internet for 5,000 guests as well as 50 staff workers (on a separate setup) in a production compound. But hey, we’re professionals; that’s our business.

The good people at The Gateway (run by Frontier Internet – not affiliated with TSI), have put together a handy guide for helping home owners figure out how much internet bandwidth they need. While the numbers of connected devices in their calculator are on the low scale and focus on home installations (not the far flung live event environments we specialize in) the post does a terrific job in explaining bandwidth considerations and provides simple to digest technical information. Good reading!

Depending on the number of users streaming video / audio, using web applications or using VPN / remote desktop software, watching online demos etc. you may need to estimate the bandwidth that will be needed for an upcoming occasion one day. In scenarios like this, this guide will be beneficial for you to avoid bad surprises during important events. Through easy questions, it guides you about the level of bandwidth you will need.

PS - Trade Show Internet also has a Bandwidth Calculator resource page with two tables to help you determine bandwidth requirements for video broadcasting and attendee WiFi. Take a look!
